The Swallow

The Swallow (Hirundo rustica ) is in decline across Europe, the droughts in Africa, changing agricultural methods and the murderous Mediterranean 'culture' of shooting anything that flies and eating anything that flies short of a Vulture haven't helped . As a boy I was lucky enough to have them nesting within arms reach on the veranda! This agile bird arrives in Britain each summer from South Africa, it feeds exclusively on flying insects and it's aerobatics make good watching. Nests are saucer shaped , built of mud and dried grass and lined with feathers, often under roof rafters and ledges, this being done usually in small colonies . There is a saying 'one Swallow doesn't make a summer'...early arrivals turning up  in  ones and twos in March to early April, and in force later in April. They take a lot of catching and Britain's only truly migratory falcon, the Hobby (Falco subbuteo)  is something that can, it follows them and similar birds from Africa each year. In the past the Swallow along with the Goose has been associated with fertility.
