The Mallard

The colours of the male, or drake Mallard duck are used to express it's land, sea and air environment. The Mallard strikes me as the archetypal duck not only in that it's the ancestor of most domestic ducks, but it's the one that everyone seems to know. No lake, wild or in a town park would complete without them! The female is a drab brown, her emphasis being on camouflage for nest concealment; the only colour is the blue in her wings speculum feathers. They have an enormous range in the northern hemisphere and have taken hold in eastern Australia and New Zealand too. There is a steam locomotive called the Mallard,  an A4 class # 4468 built in Doncaster in 1938 she holds the world speed record for  a steam locomotive, reaching 125.88 mph, not bad for named after a  duck! She is now on display at the National Railway museum in York.
