Two Endangered Species
The plight of the Roseate tern and the
British merchant navy red ensign are brought together here! Both are threatened with
extinction, the red ensign is becoming an increasingly rare sight in the global
shipping industry. This is mostly because of political encouragement of ship
owners to become true internationalists and use cheap foreign labour and fly
flags of convenience
. Over all decline in ship numbers caused by the
likes of containerization and the era of super tankers and giant bulk carriers
must also be blamed but the future of the Red Duster is very
uncertain.
